Keir Starmer Receives Firearm and Ammunition from Turkish President Erdoğan at NATO Summit
Labour leader Keir Starmer accepted a firearm and ammunition as a gift from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the recent NATO summit. The weapon, a standard practice for Erdoğan's diplomatic engagements, has not been transported to the United Kingdom.
Instead, the firearm and its accompanying ammunition are being held by British officials in Turkey. This arrangement circumvents the stringent regulations governing the import of firearms into the UK.
The Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service confirm no UK laws have been breached. Gifts received by ministers, MPs, or peers with a value exceeding £140 must be declared in the Register of Members’ Interests. If the recipient wishes to keep the item, its value is deducted from their salary.
Starmer's office stated that all appropriate procedures were followed regarding the declaration and handling of the gift. The incident highlights the diplomatic complexities surrounding certain cultural and political exchanges, particularly concerning items subject to strict national controls.
