King Charles III and Queen Camilla Visit Belfast for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Celebration
King Charles III and Queen Camilla commenced their first visit to Northern Ireland this year, arriving in Belfast to celebrate the city's upcoming hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the world's largest festival of Irish music and dance.
The royal couple's initial engagement took place in Belfast's Titanic Quarter, where they were greeted by Irish dancers and musicians. This August will mark the first time Belfast has hosted the significant cultural festival.
Bronagh McClean from County Down, involved in running Ards CCÉ (Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann), expressed considerable nervousness ahead of her performance. “I don't think I slept last night,” she remarked, emphasising the collaborative spirit of the musicians.
Members of the Belfast Bands Forum were reportedly surprised by the royal presence, having only been briefed on the visitors on the morning of the event. Darren Leighton from the forum stated, “They didn't know until the King actually stepped out of the car.” The joint performance by band music and traditional Irish music was highlighted by Maurice Brown as a successful collaboration.
This visit marks King Charles III's 43rd to Northern Ireland, dating back to 1961. Queen Camilla has now made 24 visits. The King is also scheduled for his inaugural visit to the Republic of Ireland as monarch next year, following an invitation from Irish President Catherine Connolly. The late Queen Elizabeth II's 2011 state visit to Ireland was the first by a British monarch since Irish independence.
