King Charles III Banknotes Feature Red Squirrel, Puffins, and Other UK Wildlife
New banknotes featuring the likeness of King Charles III will also include illustrations of native British wildlife, selected following a public consultation. The red squirrel, puffins, and an otter are among the creatures chosen to appear on the currency.
Public Engagement Shapes New Designs
The decision came after nearly half a million people participated in a vote, selecting from a shortlist of 18 animals. This broad public engagement process informed the final selection, which seeks to highlight the diverse ecosystems across the United Kingdom.
The inclusion of specific animals such as the red squirrel, an endangered species in parts of the UK, and puffins, emblematic of British coastal regions, underscores a focus on domestic natural heritage. Further details on the specific denominations and their respective wildlife designs are expected to be unveiled in due course by the relevant authorities.
