Laura Docherty Receives Lifelong Restriction for Attempted Toddler Murder
Laura Docherty, 38, has been jailed after a court found her guilty of attempting to murder a two-year-old girl. Docherty administered adult medication to the child, who subsequently required hospital treatment for an overdose.
Lord Arthurson, presiding over the case, imposed an Order for Lifelong Restriction (OLR) on Docherty, describing her actions as “wicked”. The OLR mandates indefinite supervision, permitting Docherty's release only when deemed safe by the Parole Board for Scotland.
The court heard that Docherty, who has previous convictions, had a history of involvement with social work services due to concerns for other children in her care. Prosecutors revealed Docherty had previously been accused of harming another child in 2011, though those charges were dropped.
During the trial, Docherty claimed the toddler had accidentally ingested her medication, a defence dismissed by the jury. The judge emphasised the “grave” nature of the offence and the enduring harm inflicted upon the child and her family.
Lord Arthurson further noted Docherty's lack of remorse, observing she remained “unrepentant” throughout proceedings. The OLR reflects the court's assessment of Docherty as a considerable and continuing risk to children, mandating stringent monitoring should she ever be considered for release.
