Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey Blocked From Donating Blood After Southern France Holiday

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey's attempt to donate blood was rejected following a recent holiday in the south of France. UK blood donation guidelines prohibit individuals who have visited specific regions of France within the last four weeks from donating, citing the potential risk of transmitting mosquito-borne viruses.

Mr Davey had intended to donate blood during a visit to a permanent blood donation centre in central London. However, after completing the standard screening questionnaire, his recent travel to an affected French region led to his deferral from donation.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) maintains strict criteria to safeguard the blood supply. These measures include temporary restrictions on donors who have travelled to areas where mosquito-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus, are known to be present. The south of France, among other locations, is periodically designated as such a risk zone.

A spokesperson for Mr Davey confirmed his recent holiday and adherence to the donation protocols, stating his understanding of the safety regulations. NHSBT regularly updates its travel deferral list, which is accessible to potential donors to ensure compliance and maintain the integrity of the national blood supply.
