Liberal Democrats Demand Immediate 10p Fuel Duty Reduction Amid Rising Petrol Prices

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has urged the government to implement an immediate 10 pence per litre cut to fuel duty. Speaking during a visit to a petrol station in Harpenden, Sir Ed attributed rising petrol prices, which currently average around £1.49 per litre for unleaded and £1.55 for diesel, to international events.

Sir Ed specifically referenced former US President Donald Trump’s actions concerning Iran, asserting that these destabilised global oil markets, thereby contributing to increased costs for British consumers. He stated that the UK’s economy and family finances are being adversely affected by the ripple effects of such foreign policy decisions.

The Liberal Democrats contend that their proposed fuel duty reduction would offer significant financial relief to motorists and businesses nationwide. This intervention comes as households grapple with persistent cost-of-living pressures, with transport expenses forming a substantial part of daily outgoings for many.
