Lochgilphead Residents Face Banking Crisis as Last Bank of Scotland Branch Closes
Lochgilphead is grappling with the closure of its final Bank of Scotland branch, a decision by Lloyds Banking Group that has left many residents, particularly older individuals and local enterprises, in a precarious financial position. The nearest alternative branch for customers like 84-year-old Maggie Dodd is now in Oban, nearly an hour’s drive away.
Ms Dodd, a Bank of Scotland customer since 1976, expressed significant distress and fear regarding online banking, citing prevalent scamming concerns. She and 83-year-old Ina Callander are now attempting to manage their finances through the local Post Office, which, however, cannot replicate the full range of bank services.
Lloyds Banking Group justified the closure by stating that most customers prefer online banking, rendering the Lochgilphead branch unviable. This stance contradicts the widespread anxiety among the local populace, highlighted by Karen McCurry of Snowdrop Argyll, who established a 'buddy scheme' to assist those struggling with the transition. Ms McCurry noted that many residents were losing sleep over the impending closure.
Local businesses are also facing operational difficulties. Adriano Pia, proprietor of the Argyll Café, reported issues with unreliable card payments and ATM access, occasionally forcing him to provide food without charge. Scott McBride, manager of the Community Shop, expressed concerns over increased insurance costs and security risks due to holding larger amounts of cash on-site, as daily bank deposits will no longer be possible.
This issue extends beyond Lochgilphead; consumer watchdog Which? reports 742 bank branch closures across Scotland since 2015. Argyll and Bute Council’s proposal for a Banking Hub in Lochgilphead, offering shared face-to-face services, was rejected by Link, the body assessing cash access, which cited the availability of ATMs and the Post Office. However, Anna Dudziak, the local sub-postmaster, confirmed her office’s inability to process all banking transactions due to imposed limits on withdrawals, deposits, and cheques.
Dougie Philand, the Provost of Argyll, stated that evidence of ongoing difficulties would be gathered to press Link for a reconsideration. The Lochgilphead branch is one of 28 Bank of Scotland closures scheduled for this year, despite a UK government review into face-to-face banking access due to report in October.
