Manchester Man Jailed for Reconnaissance Trip to UK Military Base

Mohammad Bashir, 31, from Manchester, has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism. Bashir drove Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, also from Manchester, to conduct hostile reconnaissance at a military base in the Midlands in January 2023.

Al-Shamie, who previously received an indeterminate sentence for preparing acts of terrorism, including a plot against a Manchester synagogue, had already pleaded guilty to the military base plot. His initial sentence mandates he serve a minimum of nine years and six months before parole consideration.

During the reconnaissance trip, Bashir drove Al-Shamie around the perimeter of the unnamed base, with Al-Shamie making detailed observations of security measures. Evidence presented in court included their encrypted communications, which revealed discussions about obtaining weapons and the logistics of a potential attack. Al-Shamie’s previous plots demonstrate a persistent intent to inflict harm, reflecting the ongoing domestic challenges posed by individuals groomed in an environment of anti-Western sentiment.
