Manchester Synagogue Attacker's Phones Unchecked by Police After Two Arrests
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has issued an apology after acknowledging that the mobile phones and digital devices of Jihad Al-Shamie, the individual responsible for a May 2023 attack on a Manchester synagogue, were not forensically examined following two separate arrests. The force conceded that these devices should have been reviewed as part of their investigation into Al-Shamie's activities.
Al-Shamie was apprehended in January 2023 for possession of an offensive weapon and later in April 2023 on suspicion of assault. Despite these arrests, which occurred in the months leading up to the synagogue incident, vital digital evidence remained unanalysed. The police stated that while they did not identify a direct threat to a specific place of worship during their interactions with Al-Shamie, the oversight regarding his devices represented a significant failing.
During the synagogue attack, Al-Shamie caused damage to property and assaulted several congregants. The admission from GMP highlights ongoing concerns regarding intelligence gathering and preventative measures concerning individuals flagged for previous offences. The force stated that processes have since been reviewed and updated to prevent similar oversights.
