Mark Zuckerberg Secures Meta Deal to Offset Potential California Wealth Tax
Meta has agreed to a deal that could significantly reduce Mark Zuckerberg's personal tax burden if California introduces a wealth tax. The arrangement stipulates that Meta could reimburse Zuckerberg for a portion of taxes levied on his equity awards, a move designed to mitigate the financial impact on the company's founder.
The proposed California wealth tax, which has yet to be enacted, targets the state's wealthiest residents, including those who have left within the last decade. It proposes a 1.5% levy on fortunes exceeding £750 million. Zuckerberg had previously indicated he would exit California if such a tax came into force, a stance that drew criticism given his vast wealth.
Critics argue that such arrangements, common among major corporations and their executives, effectively socialise a portion of their tax obligations. This deal ensures that Meta, rather than Zuckerberg personally, would bear some of the cost if the state proceeds with its plan to extract more revenue from its wealthiest citizens.
