Marmoset Monkey Found Abandoned in Laundry Bag on London 302 Bus

A marmoset monkey was found abandoned on a London bus, prompting an intervention by animal welfare officers. The primate was discovered by a passenger inside a laundry bag on the 302 bus service in north-west London.

The passenger alerted the bus driver, who then contacted the RSPCA. Inspector Stephanie Law, who attended the scene, described the animal as frightened and in poor condition.

The monkey, a common marmoset, was subsequently named 'Frida' by rescuers. She was immediately transported to a specialist exotics vet for an urgent examination and care. Initial assessments suggest Frida may have been kept illegally, as owning a marmoset requires a specific licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976. The RSPCA has launched an investigation to ascertain how the animal came to be abandoned.

This incident underscores the ongoing problem of exotic pets being kept in inappropriate conditions and subsequently discarded, often when owners find they cannot meet the animals' complex welfare needs. The RSPCA consistently highlights the suffering inflicted upon wild animals forced into domestic environments, often leading to neglect or abandonment once their novelty wears off or their care proves too demanding.
