Meta Suspends Employee Computer Usage Tracking for Artificial Intelligence Training
Meta has suspended an internal programme designed to track employee computer usage for artificial intelligence training, a decision reportedly driven by privacy concerns from its workforce. The initiative, launched only two months ago, involved comprehensive monitoring of staff activities across various platforms.
The programme's remit included recording and transcribing internal meetings and conversations, alongside logging employees' web browsing habits and application usage. This data was intended to bolster Meta's AI capabilities, but the extensive nature of the surveillance prompted significant internal pushback.
While the firm stated that the data collection was anonymised before being used for AI training, the sheer scope of the surveillance raised substantial questions regarding employee privacy and data security. The company has not indicated whether the programme will be revised or reinstated in the future, suggesting a capitulation to internal disquiet over corporate oversight of digital workspaces.
