Molotov Cocktail Thrown at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's San Francisco Home
San Francisco police have apprehended a 20-year-old man following an incident where a Molotov cocktail was hurled at the residence of OpenAI chief executive, Sam Altman. The early Friday morning attack in the North Beach neighbourhood resulted in a perimeter gate catching fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Threats Extended to OpenAI Headquarters
While the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) initially withheld the identity of the individual and the specific property involved, a spokeswoman for OpenAI, the prominent artificial intelligence firm behind ChatGPT, confirmed the incident took place at Mr Altman's home. She further disclosed that the arrested individual had also
“made threats at our San Francisco headquarters.”
The suspect fled the scene at Mr Altman's home before police arrived but was later arrested an hour later after appearing outside an OpenAI office and threatening to “burn down the building.”
Active Investigation Underway
The SFPD has stated that it is an “active and open investigation,” declining to comment on the man's current custody status or potential charges. Sam Altman, a billionaire and a pivotal figure in the AI sector, is widely recognised as one of the world's most influential technology executives. His company's release of ChatGPT in late 2022 catalysed the current surge in AI development and investment.
