India's digital infrastructure, a bedrock of its rapidly expanding economy, is acutely vulnerable due to the geographical concentration of its intercontinental fibre optic cables. A critical bottleneck exists along Mumbai's Versova beach, where 13 of the nation's 18 crucial undersea data cables make landfall within a mere six-kilometre radius. This unprecedented density poses substantial risks to national security and economic stability.
These cables, vital conduits for global communication and trade, currently enjoy minimal physical protection at their landing points. The lack of robust security measures leaves them exposed to accidental damage from marine activities, natural hazards, or potential sabotage. Such an incident could precipitate widespread internet outages across India, disrupting financial markets, essential services, and daily digital life for hundreds of millions.
Experts have consistently highlighted the systemic risks associated with this infrastructure chokepoint. The reliance on a single, unprotected coastal area for the majority of India's international data traffic creates a fragile dependency.
