Myanmar Military Accountable for 702 Civilian Deaths, 153 Children, UN Report Details
A recent United Nations report has revealed that Myanmar's military junta orchestrated the killing of 702 civilians between August 2023 and January 2024. Among the casualties were 153 children, a stark indication of the indiscriminate nature of the military's operations. The report details the systematic targeting of non-combatants through aerial assaults and ground offensives, which have intensified following the military's 2021 coup.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated that the military has exhibited "flagrant disregard for international law and human rights principles." The report highlighted a pattern of widespread human rights abuses, including the destruction of homes, schools, and medical facilities, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis within the country.
Since the military seized power, displacing the democratically elected government, it has met widespread resistance. The junta has responded with extreme violence, leading to thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. This ongoing campaign of suppression is facilitated by a supply chain of arms and resources, often originating from nations that maintain commercial and strategic ties with the military regime, despite international condemnation of its actions.
