NHS Introduces Teplizumab, Delaying Type 1 Diabetes Onset for Children and Adults
The National Health Service (NHS) in England has greenlit teplizumab, an immunotherapy drug, making it available to children and adults deemed at high risk of developing type 1 diabetes. This intervention offers a significant delay, potentially giving patients an additional three years before requiring daily insulin injections.
Teplizumab functions by targeting the immune system, specifically aiming to protect the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas from attack. This preventative measure is a notable advancement in managing the progression of type 1 diabetes, a condition where the body's immune system mistakenly destroys these vital cells.
Access to the drug will be through a managed access agreement. Eligible patients will be identified through screening programmes, which will assess their risk factors for type 1 diabetes. This marks a new phase in therapeutic approaches to the condition, moving beyond solely managing symptoms to actively delaying its onset.
