Nigerian Traffic Officers Detained Over Alleged Bribery Attempt on Anti-Corruption Head
Three traffic officers operating within Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory have been detained following accusations they attempted to extort a bribe from Musa Aliyu, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The officers are alleged to have stopped Mr Aliyu at a fabricated roadblock and instructed him to drive to a cash machine.
Mr Aliyu recounted the incident, stating that the officers, identifiable by their uniforms, stopped him while he was en route to work. Despite identifying himself, the officers allegedly insisted he had committed a traffic infraction and demanded money. When he refused, they reportedly ordered him to a cash point to withdraw funds.
The ICPC Chairman discreetly contacted his agency, leading to the rapid deployment of a team that apprehended the officers at the scene. They are now reportedly in the custody of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the national body responsible for road safety and traffic management.
This incident underscores the endemic corruption within some sectors of Nigeria's law enforcement, a pervasive issue that continues to undermine public trust and economic development. Mr Aliyu's experience highlights the challenges faced by ordinary citizens and the direct confrontation necessary to address systemic illicit practices.
