Northern Algeria Wildfires Kill Twelve People, Destroy Homes in Bejaia and Bouira

At least twelve people have died and hundreds more have been evacuated as wildfires continue to ravage northern Algeria. The most significant destruction has been reported in the coastal provinces of Bejaia and Bouira, where intense heatwaves and powerful winds have facilitated the rapid spread of the fires across forested areas and residential zones.

Authorities confirmed that ten of the fatalities occurred in Bejaia province, with the remaining two deaths reported in Bouira province. Several individuals are officially listed as missing, and over 600 people have been displaced from their homes as a direct consequence of the blazes.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with local emergency services and the Algerian Civil Protection agency deploying extensive resources. Firefighters, supported by military units, are working to contain the multiple fronts of the fires. The Algerian government has also implemented measures to provide shelter and assistance to those who have lost their homes or been forced to evacuate.

This current outbreak of wildfires follows a summer of extreme heat across Northern Africa, which has seen numerous fires erupt in the region.
