Northern and Central Europe Record 40C Temperatures, France Issues Red Alert
Northern and central Europe have registered unprecedented temperatures, with areas of France experiencing their earliest ever June red alert. This extreme weather event has seen approximately 150 million individuals enduring temperatures exceeding 35C.
France and Germany Bear Brunt of Heat
In France, a red alert, signifying the highest level of weather warning, has been imposed across 12 departments, predominantly in the south-west. This mandates school closures and advises residents against outdoor activities. The mercury in parts of the country is anticipated to surpass 40C. German meteorologists have also recorded their highest June temperatures in over 70 years, with some stations nearing the 40C mark.
Forecasters anticipate that the heatwave will extend its reach across Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic over the coming days. The intensity and early arrival of this heat are consistent with projections concerning anthropogenic climate change, according to climate scientists.
