Northern Ireland Disposable Income Surges 9.9% in Largest UK Regional Increase
Northern Ireland experienced the largest rise in disposable income among all UK regions in 2022, with a substantial 9.9% increase. This elevated the average disposable income per person to £22,354. These figures, released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), account for money available for spending or saving after taxes and benefits.
The growth in Northern Ireland significantly surpassed the UK average, which stood at 5.8%. Excluding London, which maintains the highest per capita disposable income at £33,799, Northern Ireland’s average remains below that of Scotland (£25,024) and Wales (£22,661).
Conversely, the West Midlands reported the lowest growth in disposable income, with a mere 2.6% increase. Despite the overall national rise, the ONS noted that price inflation had a considerable impact, diminishing the real-terms purchasing power of this income growth.
Northern Ireland’s 9.9% increase represents a notable economic shift, particularly when contrasted with other regions. While nominal incomes grew, the broader economic context of high inflation suggests that households likely felt limited gains in their financial security.
