Nottinghamshire Police Investigate Human Skeletal Remains Found Near A617 Rainworth Bypass
Nottinghamshire Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of suspected human skeletal remains in woodland by the A617 in Nottinghamshire. The cordon was established shortly before 15:00 BST on Saturday, after members of the public located the remains near Rainworth Bypass.
Forensic teams continued their work at the scene throughout Sunday, with one lane of the eastbound carriageway coned off to facilitate the investigation. Detective Inspector Matt Scott confirmed: "Whilst the investigation is still in its early stages, following inquiries carried out so far, I can confirm that the remains we have found are believed to be of one person."
Det Insp Scott acknowledged potential community concern but reassured the public that the incident "poses no risk to public safety." He stated: "The identity of this person is yet to be established, but a dedicated team of officers are working to confirm this as soon as possible." Officers are pursuing lines of inquiry to understand the circumstances of the death and how the body came to be at the location.
He emphasised the seriousness of the discovery, noting that a thorough investigation is underway with an open mind. This process is expected to take considerable time, with a police presence remaining at the scene for several days. Residents in the area can anticipate an increased police presence over the Bank Holiday weekend and into next week.
