Nurse Wins Settlement in Trans Pronouns Dispute
Jennifer Melle, a nurse from Croydon, has received a settlement from Epsom and St Helier Hospitals NHS Trust after her suspension over an alleged breach of a transgender patient's confidentiality. The dispute arose after Melle used the pronoun 'Mr' when addressing a transgender patient, leading to a racial abuse incident in May 2024.
Melle was initially given a written warning but continued in her role. The Trust also issued a warning to the patient regarding threatening and racist language. However, Melle was later suspended with full pay in March 2025 after she spoke to the media about her experience. The Trust expressed concerns that the patient could have been identified from press reports, potentially compromising confidentiality.
Following a private disciplinary meeting, Melle was reinstated to clinical duties in January, with no further action taken regarding the alleged breach. While the terms of the settlement remain undisclosed, Melle stated, "I am glad that my employer has finally decided to extend an olive branch to me." She added, "No nurse or other medical professionals should ever have to face what I have faced simply for telling the truth, doing their job, and reporting racist abuse and physical threats from a patient."
Epsom and St Helier Hospitals NHS Trust stated, "Racial abuse of our staff is never acceptable, nor is discussing a patient's private medical information publicly. We are sorry that Miss Melle had this experience and we issued a written warning to this patient, but we expect all staff to maintain patient confidentiality at all times." Melle still faces ongoing investigations by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
