Ofcom Demands Big Tech Address Online Scam Adverts Encountered by Half of UK Adults
The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has introduced new proposals that would mandate large technology companies to actively combat scam advertisements hosted on their platforms. This move follows research indicating that more than half of all adults in the United Kingdom have encountered potentially fraudulent adverts online.
Ofcom’s initiative seeks to establish a clear regulatory framework, obliging firms such as Google and Meta to implement more stringent measures against financial promotions that exploit users. This represents a shift towards greater platform accountability for content that facilitates scams, moving beyond the current voluntary approaches.
The regulator's proposals aim to safeguard consumers from illicit financial schemes, which frequently leverage the reach of major online services. Critics have long argued that big tech platforms have profited from these adverts while failing to adequately protect users, often with devastating financial consequences for victims. The new measures are intended to formalise obligations for content moderation, thereby enhancing consumer protection within the digital advertising landscape.
