Off-Duty Police Sergeant Resuscitates Merthyr Tydfil Man Twice After Cardiac Arrest in Cwmbran Shop
An off-duty police sergeant has been credited with saving the life of a man who suffered two cardiac arrests in a Cwmbran shop. James Ashley, 52, from Merthyr Tydfil, collapsed while purchasing goods, prompting immediate action from Sergeant Rhodri Evans.
Mr Ashley recounted the harrowing experience, stating he 'died twice' during the medical emergency. Sergeant Evans, who was also shopping at the time, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after Mr Ashley initially collapsed. Paramedics then used a defibrillator to restart his heart.
Minutes later, Mr Ashley suffered a second cardiac arrest. Sergeant Evans again administered CPR, successfully reviving him for a second time before emergency services could intervene further. Mr Ashley was subsequently transported to Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran, where he underwent further treatment, including the implantation of a stent.
Reflecting on the incident, Mr Ashley expressed profound gratitude for Sergeant Evans's intervention. He described the period of his recovery as 'slow' but emphasised his appreciation for the quick thinking that prevented a fatal outcome. Sergeant Evans has been commended for his calm and effective response under pressure, underscoring the vital role of public first aid knowledge.
