Ofgem Warns Seven Million Households Face Higher Bills Without Direct Debit Switch
With July’s energy price cap increase set to impact household budgets, and analysts projecting sustained high costs into the winter, consumers face continued financial strain. Despite widespread efforts to economise, experts contend that further savings are possible through immediate action.
Payment Methods and Tariffs
Approximately 22 million billpayers, representing 40% of the market, benefit from fixed tariffs. These arrangements lock in the unit cost of energy for a specified period, typically one year, offering predictability despite overall bill fluctuations based on consumption. Current market options for fixed tariffs are reportedly cheaper than the prevailing price cap, though potential sharp declines in international energy prices could diminish these savings.
Ofgem, the energy regulator, highlights a significant cost disparity linked to payment frequency. Households receiving quarterly bills, rather than utilising monthly direct debits, typically pay an extra £140 per year. Around seven million such 'standard credit accounts' remain, despite the clear financial disadvantage.
Energy Efficiency and Support
Although a heatwave may divert attention from winter preparations, energy experts suggest it is an opportune moment to enhance home efficiency. Measures such as sealing draughts, optimising cooking habits, and bleeding radiators can yield future savings. Even small adjustments, like reducing shower times, contribute to lower consumption.
Millions of pounds in benefits, particularly Pension Credit, go unclaimed, yet these schemes offer vital financial support and act as a gateway to other assistance. Local councils also operate grant programmes for energy efficiency improvements, with eligibility criteria varying by income and location. Organisations like Citizens Advice can assist individuals in determining their eligibility for such aid.
Collectively, consumers owe energy suppliers £4.5bn in outstanding bills and charges. Suppliers indicate a willingness to offer debt write-offs, structured payment plans, or assistance with white goods, provided customers communicate their financial difficulties. Various support measures are available through individual suppliers, which consumers are encouraged to explore.
