Oslo Unveils 22 July Memorial Marking 2011 Utøya Massacre Ahead of Anniversary
A new national memorial dedicated to the 77 victims of the 22 July 2011 attacks was unveiled in Oslo on Sunday. The monument stands as a permanent tribute to those killed by far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik in the capital and on Utøya island.
The artwork, designed by Norwegian artist Maja Gunnarsrud, is situated in the Government Quarter of Oslo, a location chosen for its proximity to the site of the car bomb attack that killed eight people. The memorial’s unveiling precedes the 15th anniversary of the coordinated attacks, which also saw Breivik murder 69 individuals, mostly teenagers, at a Labour Party youth camp on Utøya.
The protracted process of establishing a national memorial has been marked by years of public debate and logistical challenges. Initial proposals faced opposition from local residents, leading to delays and redesigns. The current monument represents the culmination of efforts to create a respectful and enduring space for remembrance, ensuring that the impact of the attacks is not forgotten as Norway grapples with its far-right past.
