Over 300,000 Evacuated as Wildfires Engulf Greek Homes, Businesses
Mass evacuations are proceeding across Greece as wildfires continue to devastate residential properties and businesses. Over 300,000 individuals, including both permanent residents and holidaymakers, have been forced to leave their homes and accommodations due to the uncontrolled blazes.
Witnesses recounted chaotic scenes of escape. Nikos Gatzoyas, a homeowner in Vari, south-east Athens, described a rapid advance of fire through his neighbourhood. “The flames came over the hill like a wall,” he stated, detailing how he fled with his wife, leaving behind their home as trees combusted around them. He now faces the prospect of significant property damage or total loss.
In the Peloponnese, specifically in the Ilias region, residents of Kallithea have been displaced, with the local mayor reporting extensive damage to homes and businesses. The fires here have been particularly destructive, prompting swift, large-scale evacuations.
Holidaymakers have also been severely impacted. British tourist Sarah Jones, visiting Kefalonia, spoke of being directed to evacuate her hotel as thick smoke obscured the sky. The disruption to travel and accommodation has been widespread, with many tourists relocating to safer areas or attempting to return home.
Authorities continue to deploy significant resources to combat the fires, but the sheer scale of the bl infernos has overwhelmed local capabilities in several regions. The immediate priority remains the safe evacuation of all individuals from areas threatened by the advancing flames.
