Ukrainians Evacuated from Russian-Occupied Oleshky Reach Belarus Amidst Humanitarian Claims
Hundreds of Ukrainian civilians were moved from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, located in the Kherson region, to Belarus. This transfer, overseen by Russian authorities, was presented as a humanitarian evacuation, following severe flooding caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka dam. The dam's collapse led to widespread devastation across the region, displacing thousands and creating urgent humanitarian needs.
Reports from Russian state media indicated that the individuals were transported by coach and train, arriving in Belarus. The precise number of evacuees remains unclear, with conflicting figures from various sources. Ukrainian officials have previously accused Russia of forced deportations, particularly of children, to Russia and Russian-controlled territories, characterising such actions as war crimes.
This latest movement of people raises continued scrutiny over Russia's conduct in occupied Ukrainian territories. The destruction of the Kakhovka dam has compounded an already dire humanitarian situation, further challenging international efforts to monitor and address civilian welfare under occupation.
