Pakistan Court Sentences Umar Hayat to Death for Teen TikTok Star Sana Yousaf's Murder
A Pakistani court has handed down a death sentence to Umar Hayat for the murder of 17-year-old TikTok personality Sana Yousaf. The verdict, delivered by an Islamabad court, also mandates Hayat to pay £6,700 in compensation to Yousaf's family.
Hayat, aged 23, admitted to the killing in July, explaining he had developed an obsession with Yousaf following online interactions. He stated he broke into her home in June last year after she repeatedly rebuffed him, subsequently shooting her dead.
Yousaf's father, Syed Yousaf Hassan, commented that the ruling serves as "a lesson for all such criminals in society." Police investigations involved extensive searches across Islamabad and Punjab province, analysing footage from 113 CCTV cameras.
Before her death, Yousaf maintained a substantial online presence, with over a million followers on TikTok and a further half a million on Instagram, where she was recognised for her light-hearted content. While widespread condemnation of Yousaf's murder has been noted, a segment of online users, predominantly male, has directed criticism towards her role as an influencer, often citing religious rationales. This response has been characterised by human rights activists as misogynistic and patriarchal, underscoring the hostile environment female content creators face in Pakistan's digital sphere.
