PC Jess Turnbull Suffered "Catastrophic" Injuries Directing Traffic, Inquest Hears
Police Constable Jess Turnbull, 24, suffered "catastrophic" injuries after being hit by a car while performing her duties, an inquest at Derby Coroner's Court was told. PC Turnbull was in the process of closing a section of the A50 near Chellaston, Derbyshire, on 27 September 2023, following a separate road traffic incident involving two lorries.
The hearing detailed that PC Turnbull, a probationary officer with Derbyshire Constabulary, was struck by a vehicle at approximately 23:25 BST. The driver involved was a 22-year-old male from Derby. The police officer was pronounced dead at the scene, with a post-mortem examination confirming her injuries as the cause of death.
Senior Coroner Louise Pinder adjourned the inquest to a later date, with proceedings anticipated to resume in approximately three to four months. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed it had launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer's death. This inquiry is standard procedure when a police officer dies or is seriously injured on duty.
