PlayStation 5 Price Hiked by £90 Amidst Global Economic Pressures
Sony has confirmed a substantial price increase for its PlayStation 5 consoles and the PlayStation Portal handheld device, with the changes taking effect from 2 April. The company attributes these adjustments to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”.
The recommended retail price for the standard PS5 will rise by £90 to £569.99 in the UK, representing a 19% increase. The disc-free PS5 Digital Edition will see its price climb by £80 to £519.99 (a 21% increase), while the PS5 Pro will now cost £789.99, an increase of £90. The PlayStation Portal will also see a £20 price rise, reaching £219.99.
Industry Context and Analysis
Piers Harding-Rolls, a gaming industry analyst at Ampere Analysis, suggested the price hikes were “some inevitability” and linked them to a broader “supply chain shock”. This shock is primarily driven by escalating prices for crucial components such as random access memory (RAM) and storage, both essential for console manufacturing.
These components are experiencing high demand due to the global expansion of data centres, which power artificial intelligence infrastructure. Harding-Rolls noted, “With no sign of prices easing largely due to demand for AI infrastructure, Sony will have made the move to protect its slim hardware margins.” He also speculated that rivals Microsoft and Nintendo might follow suit.
Concerns over rising component costs are widespread within the gaming sector. Valve, the company behind Steam, previously cited these issues as a reason for revising the launch and pricing of a new PC-console hybrid. Additionally, Harding-Rolls warned that potential geopolitical tensions could further “compound the effect of the component price increases”, exacerbating the “difficult position” console companies face.
While Sony states these increases are “a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences”, some consumers have reacted negatively, expressing frustration at rising console prices at this stage of the generation's lifecycle.
