PM 'Staggered' by Undisclosed Mandelson Vetting Failure
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has expressed his “staggering” disbelief at not being informed that Lord Peter Mandelson failed initial security vetting checks prior to his appointment as the UK’s ambassador to the United States. The revelation has ignited a political firestorm, with opposition parties demanding Sir Keir’s resignation.
Lord Mandelson, whose appointment was announced in December 2024 and commenced in February 2025, was subsequently dismissed seven months later due to his associations with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. A recent investigation exposed that the Foreign Office had overruled vetting officers’ recommendations against his appointment.
Sir Keir stated, “That I wasn’t told that Peter Mandelson had failed security vetting when he was appointed is staggering. That I wasn’t told that he had failed security vetting when I was telling Parliament that due process had been followed is unforgivable.” He further emphasised that “Not only was I not told, no minister was told, and I’m absolutely furious about that.”
In response, Sir Olly Robbins, who headed the Foreign Office at the time of Mandelson’s appointment, was effectively removed from his post. However, this action has not quelled the criticism. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch branded the explanation as “completely preposterous” and asserted that “all roads lead to resignation.” Similarly, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has called for a Privileges Committee investigation into whether Sir Keir intentionally misled Parliament.
While senior minister Darren Jones maintained that there was no obligation for ministers to be informed of such security vetting decisions under the prevailing rules, and therefore Sir Keir did not mislead MPs, the explanation has been widely rejected. The Prime Minister is expected to make a statement to Parliament on Monday to provide a full account of the events, following what he claims was his recent discovery of the undisclosed vetting failure.
