Port Talbot Tata Steel Plant Suffers Substantial Damage After Major Fire
A major fire erupted at the Tata Steel plant in Port Talbot on Wednesday evening, causing extensive damage to a critical production line. The incident, which began around 20:00 BST, led to the safe evacuation of staff and prompted emergency services to remain on site through Thursday.
Large plumes of black smoke were visible across the surrounding area, leading local residents in Margam and beyond to describe the scene as “very apocalyptic.” Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed if smoke was present.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham stated that the incident inflicted “substantial damage” to a “vital production line.” Rapid Relief Team UK confirmed that approximately 100 responders faced a “demanding and hazardous night’s work,” with parts of the building reportedly collapsing, making fire containment challenging.
While thanking emergency services for their “prompt and professional action” and confirming no injuries, Tata Steel clarified the fire was unrelated to a controlled demolition of an old gas holder earlier that evening. Unite has called on Tata and the government to prioritise rebuilding operations swiftly and protect jobs throughout the supply chain during this period of disruption.
