Wandsworth Council Faces Doubling Council Tax Amid Central Government Funding Cuts

Wandsworth Council has indicated that local residents could face a substantial 97% increase in their council tax bills, effectively doubling the current charge, unless the central government reconsiders its funding allocations to the borough.

Under the proposed financial adjustments, the average Band D council tax in Wandsworth would rise from its current £961 to £1,894. This represents an additional £933 annually for many households, a measure the council states is necessary to maintain services in the face of reduced central government grants.

Council leader Simon Hogg stated that the Conservative government's grant funding to Wandsworth has decreased by £72 million over the past decade, a 30% real-terms cut. This reduction, Hogg argues, forces the council into an untenable position where it must either drastically cut essential services or impose a severe financial burden on its residents.

Historically, Wandsworth has maintained some of the lowest council tax rates in the country. The council has launched a campaign urging the government to review its funding model, highlighting the potential impact on public services and household budgets across the borough.
