Prince Haakon, 51, has formally become Norway's new monarch, King Haakon VIII, following the death of his father, King Harald V. The transition was confirmed by the Royal Court in Oslo, establishing a new era for the Norwegian monarchy.

His wife, Mette-Marit, is now Queen Mette-Marit, and their 20-year-old daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, becomes Crown Princess, the heir apparent. The new King has committed to upholding the constitutional duties of his office.
