PSNI Detective Knew of Jeffrey Donaldson Abuse Allegations One Year Before Official Complaint
A detective with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and a child safeguarding expert reportedly identified Jeffrey Donaldson as a perpetrator of abuse in May 2023, following an investigation into historical sexual abuse. This identification, which emerged from interviews with a victim, occurred a full year before a formal complaint was filed against the prominent politician.
This new information raises significant questions regarding the PSNI's handling of intelligence related to child abuse allegations, particularly involving high-profile individuals. The initial investigation that uncovered Donaldson's alleged involvement focused on a separate historical abuse case.
Donaldson, a former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader, was charged in March with historical sexual offences. Following these charges, he resigned from his leadership role and was suspended from the party. His wife, Eleanor Donaldson, has also been charged with aiding and abetting in connection with the same investigation.
The PSNI's silence on why this intelligence, reportedly identifying Donaldson in May 2023, did not lead to earlier formal action is notable. The circumstances surrounding the delay between the alleged intelligence gathering and the subsequent formal complaint will undoubtedly be scrutinised.
