Pylon Fall Paralyses Worker, High Court Awards Gavin Pugh £10 Million
A linesman paralysed following a 30-foot fall from an electricity pylon five years ago has received a High Court award of £10 million. Gavin Pugh, 37, sustained life-altering injuries when he plummeted during work on an electrical line in Staffordshire in 2018.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated the incident, concluding that Mr Pugh's severe injuries could have been prevented had correct safety procedures been rigorously followed. His legal representatives argued that the contractor, Omexom, failed in its duty to ensure a secure working environment.
Mr Pugh, who was 32 at the time of the accident, suffered catastrophic spinal injuries, rendering him paraplegic. The substantial settlement is intended to cover the extensive lifelong care, adaptations to his home, and specialist equipment now required due to his permanent disability. The ruling underscores the critical importance of stringent adherence to safety regulations in hazardous industries.
