Reform MS Cai Parry-Jones Demands Removal of Ukraine Flag From Welsh Parliament
Cai Parry-Jones, a newly elected Reform Senedd member, has stated that the Ukrainian flag, flown outside the Senedd since Russia's 2022 invasion, should be taken down. Parry-Jones argued that the parliament's estate should instead prominently display an equal number of Welsh and Union flags, reflecting Wales's position within the United Kingdom.
His comments echo those of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who has publicly opposed the flying of foreign flags over public buildings. Parry-Jones maintained that while he supports the Ukrainian populace 'rightly standing up to Putin', displaying their national flag contributes nothing to deterring Russian aggression.
Focus on 'Bread-and-Butter Issues'
Parry-Jones criticised the practice as 'virtue signalling politics', contending that the public desires politicians to concentrate on 'bread-and-butter issues' such as health, education, and the Welsh economy. This position follows a similar action by a new Reform administration in Essex earlier this month, which removed a Ukrainian flag, a move its leader, Peter Harris, described as a 'proud moment'.
Currently, the Senedd flies two Welsh flags, one Union flag, and the Ukrainian flag. The Welsh Government also displays a Ukrainian flag at its headquarters. Welsh Conservative Senedd leader Darren Millar, however, expressed support for the Ukrainian flag's presence, calling it a 'visible sign of the Senedd's resolute opposition to Russia's illegal invasion'. The Senedd and Welsh Government have declined to comment on Parry-Jones's demand, a decision on future flag protocols resting with the new Llywydd, Huw Irranca-Davies.
