RNLI Crew Member Receives Harassment After Sharing Migrant Rescue Training Video

An RNLI volunteer, Elizabeth Evans, has reported receiving a torrent of abuse after sharing a video depicting a training exercise involving the charity's inshore rescue boat. The footage, posted to social media, showed Ms Evans and colleagues simulating a rescue operation, which some viewers apparently misinterpreted as an actual migrant interception.

Ms Evans described the comments as "really, really bad," highlighting the "pure hatred" directed at her and the RNLI. The RNLI has unequivocally condemned the online harassment. A spokesperson reiterated that the organisation's primary mission is to save lives at sea, without prejudice regarding the individuals involved.

This incident follows previous periods of targeted antagonism against the RNLI, particularly concerning its role in rescuing asylum seekers in the English Channel. Such campaigns often leverage the contentious issue of migration to undermine public support for search and rescue operations, aligning with broader narratives that criminalise and dehumanise those crossing the Channel. The RNLI maintains its commitment to maritime safety, irrespective of the political climate or the origins of those in distress.
