Rwanda Military Basketball Team Expelled from African League Following US Sanctions
Rwanda's APR basketball team, representing the nation's army, has been formally expelled from the Basketball Africa League (BAL). This move comes after the United States Treasury Department announced sanctions against the Rwandan military, citing its alleged role in the ongoing conflict within the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) specified that the sanctions were enacted due to Rwanda's support for the M23 rebel group, which has been actively engaged in hostilities in eastern DR Congo. These allegations have been consistently denied by the Rwandan government.
The BAL, a joint venture between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), confirmed the team's removal. This decision underscores the broader implications of international sanctions, extending beyond direct financial or military strictures to affect cultural and sporting engagements, thereby isolating regimes deemed to be undermining regional stability.
