Sadiq Khan States Heathrow Third Runway Remains Outdated, Financially Risky Enterprise

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has unequivocally stated his condemnation of the proposed third runway at Heathrow Airport, describing it as an "outdated and financially indefensible" enterprise. His remarks were submitted in response to a government consultation regarding the project, reinforcing a position long held by the Mayor and various environmental organisations.

Mr Khan highlighted that the current economic climate, coupled with heightened awareness of climate change, renders the expansion an unacceptable proposition. He emphasised the considerable financial burden associated with the project, asserting it would divert crucial investment from more sustainable infrastructure initiatives across the UK. Furthermore, the Mayor pointed to the significant increase in air and noise pollution that would inevitably affect London residents, contravening environmental commitments and public health concerns.

The Mayor's office underscored that government resources should instead be directed towards enhancing existing transport networks and investing in green technologies. This approach, they argue, would provide genuine, long-term economic benefits without incurring the severe environmental and financial liabilities inherent in Heathrow's expansion plan.
