These scam operations have been utilising the pub's address as the location for non-existent accommodation.

Family Loses £3,000 to Deceptive Booking

One notable incident involved the Hamilton family from Northern Ireland, who travelled to Edinburgh for a university open day. They discovered their booking for 'The Edinburgh Holiday Apartments' was a fabrication upon arrival at The Booking Office Wetherspoon pub. The family had paid approximately £3,000 for what they believed was legitimate accommodation.

Consumer champion Which? has highlighted the pervasive nature of these scams, noting that many victims booked through third-party sites like Booking.com, Expedia, and Hotels.com. These platforms often fail to adequately verify properties, leaving consumers vulnerable to sophisticated fraudsters who exploit legitimate addresses to create convincing, yet fake, listings.

Which? has called for stronger regulatory oversight and more robust verification processes from booking platforms to protect consumers from such deceptive practices. The incident underscores the critical need for travellers to exercise extreme caution and verify accommodation details directly with established providers before committing significant funds.
