Scotland Caps Bus Fares at £2, Consolidates Health Boards to Two

First Minister John Swinney has announced a new £2 cap on bus fares across Scotland, effective from Monday. This initiative, part of the Scottish Government's Programme for Government, aims to make public transport more affordable for commuters.

Alongside the fare cap, Swinney outlined plans for a radical restructuring of the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland. The current fourteen health boards will be consolidated into just two, a move the government states will streamline administration and improve service delivery. This reorganisation follows ongoing scrutiny of public service efficiency and resource allocation.

The fare cap extends an existing pilot scheme that has been in operation for several months, now applying to all bus journeys throughout the country. Critics have previously questioned the long-term financial viability of such subsidies without corresponding investment in wider public transport infrastructure.
