ScotRail Issues Apology as New Ticketing App Fails, Stranding Passengers
ScotRail has issued an apology after the rollout of its new mobile ticketing application on Thursday morning resulted in widespread operational failures, leaving many passengers unable to purchase fares.
System Overload Halts Ticket Sales
The new app, intended to replace the previous system, encountered immediate technical difficulties, with numerous users reporting error messages and an inability to complete transactions. This forced many commuters to seek alternative methods for buying tickets, including station kiosks and on-board purchases, causing delays and frustration.
A spokesperson for ScotRail attributed the system's collapse to an unexpected overload
of traffic shortly after its launch. Customers attempting to book tickets through the application were frequently met with a message stating, something went wrong
, preventing any progress.
Alternative Booking Methods Urged
In response to the disruption, ScotRail advised passengers to utilise the company's website or physical ticket machines at stations for bookings. They also stated that staff were instructed to assist customers experiencing difficulties, including allowing on-board ticket purchases without penalty where station facilities were inaccessible due to the app's failure.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges in modernising public transport infrastructure and the critical need for robust system testing before public deployment. This failure left thousands of passengers in a difficult position, highlighting the fragility of digital-first initiatives without adequate contingency planning.
