Secret Service Kill 21-Year-Old Suspect After White House Shooting Incident
A suspect in a shooting incident near the White House was killed following an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service agents on Saturday evening. Officials confirmed the fatality, identifying the individual as Nasire Best, 21, who was reportedly known to the Secret Service and had a documented history of mental health problems.
The US Secret Service stated that one bystander was wounded in the shooting and has been hospitalised, though details on their condition remain undisclosed. No Secret Service officers were injured during the incident. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and road closures around the White House are expected to persist overnight.
The confrontation occurred outside the White House, specifically at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Reports indicate that between 10 and 20 gunshots were fired. The Secret Service detailed that the man produced a firearm from his bag and began shooting shortly before 18:00 (23:00 GMT). Secret Service police returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at hospital.
Sources indicated that Best had been arrested in July 2025 for attempting to access the White House, after which he was reportedly sent to a psychiatric facility. President Donald Trump was in residence at the White House during the shooting and was briefed on the incident by a White House official, but has yet to issue a public statement.
