Shaun Burton, 60, East Midlands Railway Driver, Dies in Bedford Train Collision
Shaun Burton, 60, an East Midlands Railway (EMR) driver and a respected former parish and district councillor for The Stukeleys in Cambridgeshire, has died following a train collision near Bedford on Friday. The incident, involving two London-bound services, resulted in 100 injuries.
Tom Sanderson, a Huntingdon District Council member for The Stukeleys, described Burton as a "great stalwart of the local community," expressing profound shock and devastation among residents. Sanderson recounted Burton's dedication, often seen cycling to and from work during unsociable hours, and his significant contributions to the community, particularly his passionate advocacy for road safety.
Will Rogers, managing director at EMR, remembered Burton as "a much loved colleague: kind, generous and intelligent," who was highly respected as both a driver and a train manager. Sarah Conboy, leader of Huntingdonshire District Council, and Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, also offered condolences, acknowledging Burton's community impact and the widespread grief.
Network Rail has indicated that the railway line between Bedford and Luton is expected to remain closed until 28 June. Both trains involved in the collision were removed on Monday as EMR prioritises the safe recovery of the railway infrastructure.
