Shein Faces Valuation Challenges Ahead of Hong Kong Stock Exchange Debut
Shein, the online fast fashion retailer, is expected to debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, accepting a valuation far below its peak. The company's current valuation, reportedly around $50 billion, represents a notable reduction from the $66 billion it commanded in a private funding round in May 2023, and a substantial decline from its 2022 valuation of $100 billion.
This Hong Kong listing marks the culmination of a protracted effort by Shein to go public, following unsuccessful attempts to secure listings in New York and London. The company's pursuit of a New York listing was met with scrutiny from US lawmakers, who raised concerns regarding its labour practices and supply chain transparency.
A London listing also proved challenging, with reports indicating resistance from certain institutional investors and a lack of enthusiasm from the UK government. The perceived risks associated with Shein's operational model and its origins have evidently influenced its path to public markets.
