Sir Charlie Mayfield Advises Phone Calls for UK Workers Reporting Sickness
A new government-commissioned report recommends that UK workers contact their employers via phone when reporting sickness. Sir Charlie Mayfield, former chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, suggests that reliance on text messages and emails contributes to disengagement among ill employees and hinders their eventual return to the workplace.
The report, entitled 'Occupational Health: Working for a Healthier Tomorrow', asserts that direct verbal communication fosters a stronger connection between an employee and their manager during periods of absence. This approach is intended to provide better support and facilitate more effective planning for an employee's reintegration into their role.
Sir Charlie's findings highlight that while digital communication offers convenience, it can inadvertently create a distance that is detrimental to employee wellbeing and productivity when dealing with health-related absences. The recommendation forms part of broader proposals aimed at improving occupational health services across the country, with a focus on preventative measures and early intervention to keep more people in employment.
