
Sir George Howarth, Labour MP for Knowsley, Dies Aged 77 After Decades of Service
Sir George Howarth, the long-serving Labour Member of Parliament for Knowsley, has passed away at the age of 77. First elected in 1986, Sir George dedicated nearly four decades to parliamentary service, representing the constituents of Knowsley North, then Knowsley North and Sefton East, before the current Knowsley seat.
His political journey commenced in the 1970s, serving on Haringey Council prior to his election to Westminster. A prominent figure within the Labour government of Tony Blair, Sir George held ministerial portfolios including prisons minister and parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Northern Ireland Office.
Known for his commitment to public service, Sir George Howarth was recognised with a knighthood in 2022 for his political and public contributions. His tenure in Parliament marked him as one of its most experienced members, with a career that spanned significant political shifts and numerous legislative sessions.
