Snapchat Joins Major Platforms Combatting Proliferation of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content
Snapchat has announced it will require creators to disclose when images shared on the platform have been generated or significantly altered by artificial intelligence. This move follows similar policy adjustments from other major online platforms, including YouTube, LinkedIn, and Substack, as the digital landscape grapples with the proliferation of AI-generated content.
The company stated that undisclosed AI-generated imagery will be ineligible for monetisation through its 'Spotlight' feature, a significant financial incentive for content creators. Snap Inc., Snapchat's parent company, detailed these changes during its annual 'Partner Summit', emphasising a commitment to transparency regarding synthetic media.
Platforms are increasingly contending with the capabilities of large language models and other generative AI tools, which have made it simpler and faster to create realistic, yet fabricated, content. The policy updates across these platforms signify an industry-wide effort to establish clearer guidelines and controls for AI-produced material, aiming to mitigate potential misuse and misinformation.
